Position Purpose
The British Museum Internship Programme 2024 offers an exciting opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in various departments within the museum. This program is designed to provide interns with an in-depth understanding of museum practices while fostering personal and professional development in a cultural heritage setting.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in the curation and interpretation of exhibitions, collections, and displays.
- Support the conservation team in preserving artifacts, conducting research, and documenting collections.
- Engage in educational and outreach activities aimed at enhancing visitor experiences and community engagement.
- Contribute to research projects related to the Museum’s collections, working with scholars and specialists to produce new insights.
- Participate in public programming, including lectures, workshops, and guided tours.
- Assist with administrative tasks, report writing, and the organization of events.
- Collaborate with different departments to gain a broad perspective on museum operations and the role of cultural institutions in society.
Education
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant degree program (e.g., Museum Studies, History, Archaeology, Art History, Anthropology, Education, or related fields).
- Strong academic performance in your chosen field of study.
Experience
- Previous experience in museums, galleries, or cultural institutions is desirable but not required.
- Research or project work related to cultural heritage, history, or education is advantageous.
Skills
- Strong research, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Enthusiasm for learning about museum practices, collections, and public engagement.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with museum management systems is a plus.
