Position Purpose:
The Surrey Police Internship program offers students and recent graduates the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in various departments within the police force. The purpose of these internships is to provide interns with an understanding of police operations, enhance their skills, and provide them with the experience needed to pursue careers in law enforcement or public service. Interns will work closely with experienced police staff and officers to contribute to the safety and well-being of Surrey’s communities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with daily administrative tasks within the assigned department (e.g., HR, IT, Community Relations, or Operational Support).
- Support officers in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to ongoing projects.
- Engage with community outreach programs to promote Surrey Police initiatives.
- Conduct research on law enforcement trends, policies, and community safety strategies.
- Shadow police officers or staff in their daily duties for insight into operational roles.
- Assist with project coordination and management tasks under the supervision of department heads.
- Maintain confidentiality and integrity when handling sensitive information.
Education:
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a degree in Criminology, Law, Public Administration, Information Technology, Human Resources, Social Sciences, or related fields.
- Strong academic record in relevant subjects is desirable.
Experience:
- Previous internships or volunteer experience in a related field is a plus but not required.
- Demonstrated interest in law enforcement, community service, or public safety is advantageous.
Skills:
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Basic understanding of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical and research skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Organized and detail-oriented with excellent time management skills.
- Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
