Position Purpose:
Surrey County Council’s Internship Program and Apprenticeship Scheme offer students, graduates, and individuals seeking new career opportunities the chance to gain valuable experience in public administration. Trainees and apprentices will work across various departments, helping to support the delivery of essential services for the residents of Surrey. This program is designed to provide hands-on experience, professional development, and a pathway to full-time employment within local government.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the day-to-day operations of assigned council departments (e.g., Education, Social Services, Environmental Services, Finance, IT, and more).
- Contribute to the planning and execution of projects aimed at improving community services.
- Attend departmental meetings and provide input on key initiatives and policies.
- Perform data collection, research, and analysis to support the decision-making process.
- Help with the coordination of public engagement activities and events.
- Shadow senior council staff to gain insight into the inner workings of local government.
- Assist in creating reports, presentations, and other communication materials.
- Ensure that work aligns with council policies, regulations, and standards.
- Uphold the Council’s values of transparency, inclusivity, and community-driven service.
Education:
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Public Administration, Business, Social Sciences, IT, Environmental Studies, or related fields.
- Apprenticeships are open to individuals at various educational levels, from school leavers to those with university qualifications.
Experience:
- No prior experience is required for entry-level apprenticeships, though some experience in public service, administration, or related fields is beneficial.
- Internships may require relevant volunteer work or previous internships in areas related to government, policy, or administration.
Skills:
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to collaborate with others and contribute to a team.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Willingness to learn new systems and processes.
- A proactive attitude and commitment to providing high-quality public service.
