Position Purpose:
The St Helens Council Internship Programme 2024 offers students and recent graduates the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in local government. Interns will work across various council departments, including social services, environmental health, education, and public administration. The program is designed to provide real-world exposure to public sector operations, helping interns develop their skills and gain insights into how local government functions to serve the community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the daily operations of your assigned department, such as social services, education, or environmental management.
- Support project teams with research, data collection, and analysis to improve service delivery.
- Help with the coordination and planning of community events, outreach programs, or educational initiatives.
- Attend meetings with department leaders and contribute ideas to enhance public services.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and documents for internal and external stakeholders.
- Work with the customer service teams to address queries and concerns from St Helens residents.
- Collaborate with other interns and council staff on cross-departmental projects.
- Assist in managing budgets, creating financial reports, and tracking expenditures (if placed in finance or administration departments).
- Ensure all activities align with council policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Education:
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Public Administration, Social Sciences, Environmental Studies, Business, or a related field.
- Relevant coursework or academic projects in public administration, governance, or social work are desirable.
Experience:
- No previous experience is required, though any internships, volunteer work, or part-time jobs in public service or related fields are beneficial.
- Demonstrated interest in local government, public service, or community development is preferred.
Skills:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Research and data analysis skills are advantageous.
