Position Purpose:
Southern Railway is excited to offer an Apprenticeship Internship Program for 2024, providing hands-on experience in the dynamic world of rail transport. This program is designed to equip participants with practical skills, industry knowledge, and the qualifications needed to pursue a rewarding career in the railway sector. Apprentices will gain exposure to various aspects of railway operations, customer service, and technical roles, preparing them for future opportunities within the industry.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the daily operations at stations, including ticketing, customer inquiries, and passenger assistance.
- Learn and understand safety protocols and procedures vital to railway operations.
- Support the management of train schedules, including real-time adjustments and updates.
- Collaborate with different departments such as engineering, operations, and customer service.
- Participate in station management tasks, ensuring the smooth flow of passengers and adherence to safety regulations.
- Shadow senior staff in operational roles to gain a comprehensive understanding of railway services.
- Assist in the preparation of reports, data analysis, and documentation related to railway operations.
- Engage in training sessions focused on health and safety, customer service excellence, and industry regulations.
- Ensure the station environment is clean, safe, and welcoming for passengers.
Education:
- A minimum of GCSEs (or equivalent), ideally including English and Maths.
- A keen interest in transport, logistics, customer service, or engineering.
- Any related qualifications in transport, engineering, or business are advantageous but not required.
Experience:
- Previous experience in customer service, transport, or a fast-paced operational environment is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Experience working in teams or in roles requiring interaction with the public is desirable.
Skills:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide clear and friendly customer service.
- Eagerness to learn and develop in the railway industry.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and independently when needed.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and other office software.
- Flexibility to adapt to different tasks and responsibilities within the apprenticeship.
