Position Purpose:
Southeastern Railway Careers is offering an exciting Internship Program for 2024, providing motivated individuals with the chance to experience the rail industry first-hand. This internship is designed to offer participants valuable insights into the inner workings of rail operations, customer service, and safety. Through hands-on learning, interns will develop the skills and knowledge necessary for a future career in rail transport, whether in operations, engineering, customer service, or management.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with day-to-day station operations, ensuring smooth passenger flow and providing customer support.
- Support train and station staff with ticketing, crowd management, and on-time departures.
- Learn and adhere to safety protocols, ensuring a safe environment for both passengers and employees.
- Participate in the scheduling and coordination of train services, gaining exposure to operational planning.
- Assist in data collection, reporting, and analysis to help improve efficiency and service delivery.
- Shadow different departments such as engineering, station management, and customer service to understand the full spectrum of rail operations.
- Engage in customer service tasks, answering passenger inquiries, handling complaints, and ensuring a positive travel experience.
- Assist in maintaining the station environment by ensuring cleanliness, safety standards, and accessibility are met.
- Participate in workshops and training sessions on industry regulations, safety standards, and customer service excellence.
Education:
- Minimum of GCSEs (or equivalent), with English and Maths preferred.
- Interest in transportation, logistics, engineering, or customer service.
- Additional qualifications in business, engineering, or transportation are an advantage but not mandatory.
Experience:
- Experience in customer service, retail, or operations is desirable but not essential.
- Previous experience working in teams or in fast-paced environments is beneficial.
- Any work experience in the transportation or logistics sectors is a plus.
Skills:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide professional customer service.
- A willingness to learn and adapt to different areas of railway operations.
- Teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues across departments.
- Problem-solving abilities and attention to detail, especially when managing operational tasks.
- Basic computer literacy, including proficiency in using standard office software.
- A passion for the rail industry and a desire to contribute to improving passenger experiences.
