Position Purpose:
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) Internship 2024 program offers a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain experience at the UK’s largest independent producer of official statistics. The program is designed to provide exposure to data analysis, research, and policy development in areas like the economy, population, public health, and social trends. Interns will work closely with experienced statisticians, economists, and data scientists, contributing to projects that influence decision-making at the highest levels.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in collecting, processing, and analyzing statistical data for various sectors, including economy, population, and public health.
- Contribute to the preparation of reports, briefings, and statistical releases that inform government policy, businesses, and the public.
- Conduct research and provide insights on emerging trends, helping to develop new methodologies and tools for data analysis.
- Work collaboratively with ONS teams on specific projects, ensuring accurate, timely, and comprehensive data is delivered.
- Support the development and improvement of ONS processes, including data collection and dissemination.
- Participate in stakeholder engagement activities, assisting in the communication of findings to both internal and external audiences.
- Undertake administrative duties as required, such as organizing meetings, managing project timelines, and contributing to team discussions.
Education:
- A Bachelor’s degree (or final-year student) in subjects such as Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Data Science, Social Sciences, or a related field.
Experience:
- Recent graduates or students in their final year of study.
- Prior internship or project experience in data analysis, research, or statistical methodologies is an advantage but not essential.
Skills:
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills, with an ability to interpret and present data clearly.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, and familiarity with statistical tools and software (e.g., R, Python, or SPSS) is desirable.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex data to non-specialist audiences.
- Attention to detail and high standards of accuracy in data handling.
- Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively within a team.
- Interest in statistics, public policy, economics, or social trends is highly valued.
