Job Description
The Centre for Environment, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) is offering an exciting Summer Internship Programme for 2024/2025. This program provides a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in marine and environmental science. Interns will have the chance to work on real-world research projects that contribute to the sustainability of our oceans, marine life, and fisheries, while supporting Cefas’ mission to safeguard the health of marine ecosystems.
This internship is ideal for individuals passionate about marine biology, environmental science, fisheries management, or related fields. Interns will be placed within various research teams and will contribute to important projects while receiving mentorship from experienced scientists.
Responsibilities
- Assist with data collection, analysis, and reporting for ongoing research projects related to marine ecosystems, fisheries, and environmental sustainability.
- Participate in fieldwork, including sampling and monitoring of marine species and habitats.
- Help with laboratory work, such as processing samples and conducting experiments.
- Support the development of research publications, technical reports, and presentations.
- Conduct literature reviews and research to support ongoing scientific investigations.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to contribute to innovative solutions for marine and environmental challenges.
- Assist with administrative tasks related to research projects, including organizing data and maintaining documentation.
Qualifications
- Current undergraduate or postgraduate student, or recent graduate (2023 or 2024), in a relevant field such as marine biology, environmental science, fisheries management, oceanography, or a related discipline.
- A strong interest in marine science, environmental sustainability, and research.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
Experience
- Previous experience in laboratory work, research, or fieldwork is desirable but not essential.
- Experience in data analysis, scientific writing, or working on research projects is a plus.
- Participation in extracurricular activities or university projects related to marine or environmental sciences will be considered an advantage.
Skills
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Ability to collect, manage, and interpret scientific data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with data analysis software is desirable.
- Good organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks.

- Attention to detail and a proactive approach to learning new skills.
