Job Description:
Barnsley Council is offering exciting internship opportunities for 2024 as part of our commitment to developing future talent and fostering innovation within local government. Our internships provide hands-on experience in a variety of departments, including Public Health, Urban Planning, Social Care, Communications, and Environmental Services. This program is designed to give undergraduates and recent graduates insight into public service operations, allowing them to contribute to meaningful projects that have a positive impact on the local community. Interns will gain invaluable experience, develop key skills, and build professional networks within local government.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the delivery of public services and initiatives within your assigned department.
- Support the development and implementation of community projects or policy initiatives.
- Conduct research, data collection, and analysis to inform decision-making processes.
- Participate in cross-departmental meetings, contributing ideas and insights to project goals.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and other documentation for internal and external use.
- Engage with the local community and stakeholders to support project outcomes.
- Ensure adherence to council policies and regulations in all assigned tasks.
- Help identify areas for improvement and suggest innovative solutions.
Qualification:
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program or recently graduated from a university, ideally in fields such as Public Administration, Social Sciences, Business, Environmental Studies, Communications, or related disciplines.
- A strong academic record, with a 2:1 or equivalent preferred.
- A genuine interest in public service, local government, and community development.
Experience:
- Previous experience in a local government setting, voluntary work, or community projects is beneficial but not required.
- Experience in conducting research, writing reports, or delivering presentations is an advantage.
- Familiarity with local issues and community engagement will be valued.
Skills:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with colleagues and the public.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks.
- Analytical thinking with a problem-solving mindset.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
